Battery care and storage
Charging, storage voltage, retirement criteria, and disposal for the LiPo packs that power your aircraft.
Daily use
- Charge at 1C on a balance charger — 1C is the pack's capacity in amps, so a 1300 mAh pack charges at 1.3 A.
- Land at 3.5 V per cell under load; a pack resting below 3.3 V per cell has been over-discharged.
- Let packs cool before recharging.
Storage
LiPos age fastest sitting full. If a pack won't fly within a day or two, store it at 3.8 V per cell (every balance charger has a storage mode). Store in a fireproof container, away from anything flammable, at room temperature.
When a pack is done
Retire a pack that is puffed, has a damaged wire or connector you can't service, drops noticeably more voltage under load than its siblings, or won't balance within a few hundredths of a volt. Condition beats cycle count every time — a puffed pack at 40 cycles is done, and a well-treated pack can outlive the estimate.
The Hangar's battery list tracks cycles per pack and shows a wear hint against a nominal 300-cycle life, so a pack at 150 cycles reads as roughly half used. Treat that bar as a rough prompt to inspect, not a retirement date.
Disposal
Discharge fully (a resistive discharger or salt-water bath over a few days), then take the pack to a battery recycling point — most electronics retailers and municipal hazardous-waste sites accept LiPos. Never bin a charged pack.
