Forge basics: projects, parts, and credits

How the Forge CAD workspace is organized, what plans and seats include, and how design-engine credits are spent.

Forge is the in-browser CAD studio: script-driven solid parts, revision history, 2D drawings, and a design engine that generates parts from a prompt.

Workspaces and plans

  • Free — personal workspace, 2 active projects, 15 design-engine credits a month.
  • Maker — personal workspace, one seat, more projects and credits.
  • Team / Enterprise — shared org workspace with seats for members.

Projects hold parts and drawings. Every part gets a stable part number (SPX-FRG-…), and every save appends an immutable revision — you can always walk history back.

Credits

Design-engine generations spend credits. Your plan includes a monthly allowance, and top-up packs add more within the current period. Top-ups do not roll over — any unused top-up credits are cleared when the billing period renews, so buy them for work you are doing now, not as a balance to bank. The workspace billing page shows the meter and every charge. Editing parts by hand is free — credits only meter the generator.

Generations are also rate-limited to 20 per five minutes, which no normal design session reaches.

Roles in a team workspace

Owners and managers handle billing and seats; operators create and edit; viewers read. Roles come from your Space membership — see Account, Spaces, and roles.

Imports

You can import STL/OBJ/PLY/3MF/AMF/glTF meshes and use them like native solids — booleans, transforms, and sharing included. Big meshes are welded and split into bodies on import, and inward-facing winding is detected and flipped for you, so an inside-out source file usually just works.

Common friction

  • "Out of credits" mid-design: top-ups are bought from the workspace billing page, and they need an active paid subscription — on the Free plan there is nothing to top up, so you change plan instead. Only owners and managers can buy them; operators have to ask.
  • Can't create a project: viewers can't — ask an owner/manager for the operator role.
